With this showcase in Utrecht MFR presents three of the artists involved with the label, two already with releases and one with an upcoming release (Hellvete). This special event together with Vechtclub XL and Gonzo (circus) will also be the presentation of the new album by Zeno van den Broek who previously released an album on MFR as Machinist.

ZENO VAN DEN BROEK
The work of Zeno van den Broek revolves around space, spatiality and time, in which he uses both the audial and the visual to influence space and spatial awareness, both in a tactile and mental way. Originally trained as an architect Zeno creates work which investigates and is strongly related to the spaces and locations it is placed or created in. He uses different ways of expression: album releases, performances, installations and paintings to be able to comprehend and express the richness and complexity of spatiality.

His live performances combine the visual and the audial. Zeno works with pure sound sources such as sine waves and white noise, creating site-specific patterns of interference and fully utilizing the acoustics of the space. The sound merges with the existing architecture of the venue, creating new fluid spaces in which the position of the auditor alters his/her experience.

Zeno van den Broek has performed at various venues and festivals such as Mediamatic, Glow and State-X New Forms. He has exhibited work in and created site-specific work for various galleries and museums such as Gallery SANAA, Kulter and the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.

HELLVETE
“Hellvete is the solo moniker of Glen Steenkiste. Previously active in Silvester Anfang and Sylvester Anfang II and one of the founders of the Funeral Folk label. Hellvete draws influences from early Minimalism and old folk music and with the use of harmonium, bowed banjo, electric tampura and analog synth he creates probing intense sounds that try to undo notions of time and place. Steenkiste’s music is like taking an endless shower of sunbeams, warm, comforting and mind-altering. Music that makes time stand still and focuses on shifting details and textures, but massive in sound and presence.”

ORPHAX
Amsterdam based musician and trained drummer Sietse van Erve was introduced to electronic music in the early nineties. After playing around with tracker software, he eventually recorded his first music with beats and melodies in 1998, but soon lost interest in both.

He started researching new sounds and new ways of working – always with an organic touch, including incorporating sounds that would be regarded by others as errors or mistakes, as life isn’t without errors either. Most of his work is improvised, using a laptop and random objects ranging from keyboards, plastic cups being played with a bow, to vocals. The result is an organic lo-fi form of drone and minimal music.
Besides being organic most of the Orphax’s releases are melancholic and even sad.

Musical influences are Eliane Radigue, Phill Niblock, Catherine Christer Hennix and Kassel Jaeger as well as folk and classical music from India and Tibet, mainly throat and overtone singing.
Besides making music, Sietse van Erve runs Moving Furniture Records and curates concerts at home, at Amsterdam institute STEIM and concert venue OCCII and is involved with SOTU Festival.
